Dr Gaurav Dixit says that in anemia, patient’s body doesn't produce enough red blood cells and consequently oxygen is deprived, which makes patient to suffer from fatigue along with serious health complications.
Due to an exceptional understanding about Hemato-Oncology, Dr Gaurav Dixit is always willing to interact, learn and help. This interactive blog enlightening the diagnostic workup road map for evaluation of Multiple Myeloma by him is need of the hour.
Anemia is condition of iron-poor blood is a common disorder. In this condition, the deficiency in patient’s red blood cells impedes delivery of oxygen throughout the body.
Most common cause of anemia: low iron levels in the blood – iron-deficiency anemia.
What will happen to red blood cells in body without iron?- Without iron, red blood cells become low in a protein called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body & is essentially responsible for patient to begin suffocate from within.
Range of normal red blood cell count in female: 12 grams per deciliter of blood (g/DL) Range of normal red blood cell count male: 15g/DL
Note: In case patient shows below-normal levels, other blood tests to determine what’s at the root of the problem become necessity.
Due to oxygen starvation in patient of anemia who do not seek treatment are considered severe cases and experience major organ damage.
CAUSES OF ANEMIA
Even if not bleeding, old red blood cells constantly need to be replaced with new ones.
A number of factors can cause red blood cells lacking in sufficient hemoglobin or normal production:
These include:
In case anemic, patient complains weary after shorter periods of exertion as body's cells become starved for oxygen.
As anemia worsens, visible physical changes are evident:
Other symptoms associated with anemia include:
If consistently patient feels weak or have any of the other symptoms associated with anemia, next step should be to consult clinical hematologist.
